They didn't just want a conversation pit or a dining set; they wanted a battlefield. A stage for strategy. Our most unique request was to transform a client's entire patio into a functional, life-sized chessboard, with each piece serving as durable, weather-resistant seating.
The vision was grand: thirty-two custom pieces, kings and pawns alike, doubling as art and furniture. We sculpted the black pieces from powder-coated aluminum with deep, cushioned seats, cool to the touch even in summer sun. The white pieces were crafted from solid, weathered teak, warm and smooth. The board itself was laid with alternating granite and limestone tiles, a permanent game floor.
The true magic, however, was in the movement. Each heavy piece was fitted with discreet, heavy-duty casters, allowing the owners to literally play a game by shifting their seats. A queen's gambit involved sliding a throne. Castling meant moving a fortified rook. It became more than furniture; it was an interactive heirloom, a centerpiece for gatherings where guests became players in a living game. This project was a checkmate against ordinary outdoor design, proving that with custom creation, your patio can become not just a place to sit, but a place to play, think, and conquer.
