First, we begin with coarse-grit sandpaper (typically 60 to 80 grit) to remove any large wood fibers, rough patches, or milling marks left by sawing and planing. This initial pass ensures the removal of potential splinter sources. Next, we switch to medium-grit sandpaper (100 to 150 grit) to smooth the surface further, eliminating smaller irregularities while preparing the wood for finer finishing. The third and most critical step uses fine-grit sandpaper (180 to 220 grit) applied in the direction of the wood grain—this is essential for preventing grain tear-out and creating a uniformly polished feel.

For premium models, we add a fourth stage with ultra-fine grit (240 to 320 grit) on a random orbital sander, which eliminates even microscopic roughness that could cause splinters over time. Every board is then hand-inspected: a gloved hand runs across the entire seat surface to detect any missed snags. Finally, we apply a protective sealant that not only guards against moisture and UV damage but also further bonds the wood fibers, reducing the risk of splinters even after years of outdoor exposure.
