At our planter box factory, we prioritize transparency and durability, so we have conducted controlled aging tests on our primary wood species—cedar, redwood, and thermally modified pine.

When new, all three woods exhibit vibrant, warm tones: cedar shows a rich reddish-brown, redwood displays a deep mahogany hue, and thermally modified pine presents a uniform, dark chocolate color. After the first year of outdoor exposure, you’ll notice a gradual shift. Cedar begins to lighten, turning into a soft, silvery gray with subtle amber undertones. Redwood develops a more muted, weathered brown, often with hints of rustic bronze. Thermally modified pine darkens slightly further before settling into a consistent, smoky charcoal-gray.

By the end of two years, the color transformation is complete but stable. All woods achieve a beautiful, aged patina that ranges from silver-gray (cedar) to earthy taupe (redwood) to deep gray-black (thermal pine). Importantly, this color change is purely cosmetic—wood density and rot resistance remain fully intact, as confirmed by moisture content readings (always below 12%) and resistance to fungal decay tests.

We have preserved cross-section samples from each stage (new, 1-year, and 2-year) that you can view at our showroom or request as digitized images. These samples clearly show the surface grain texture remaining tight, with only minimal cracking, and the color evolution is predictable and attractive for garden aesthetics.
