Unlike ground-level planting, rooftop systems must manage every drop of water carefully to prevent structural damage, waterlogging, or violations of drainage codes. Our engineering team has developed a multi-layered drainage solution specifically tailored for such environments.
First, every planter box we manufacture for rooftop use features a built-in water reservoir layer at the base. This layer, made from lightweight, UV-stable polypropylene, holds excess water that would otherwise run off. A capillary wicking fabric sits above the reservoir, drawing moisture upward to plant roots as needed. This not only reduces runoff volume but also provides a self-watering buffer during dry periods.
Second, we incorporate an adjustable overflow control system. A small, screened outlet at the side of the planter allows water to escape only when the reservoir reaches a predetermined maximum level. The outlet can be fitted with a hose adapter to direct any overflow to a designated collection point, such as a rain barrel or a building’s internal drainage system, ensuring zero uncontrolled runoff.
Third, each box is lined with a heavy-duty PVC waterproof membrane that is heat-welded at seams. This membrane prevents water from seeping into the rooftop surface, protecting the building’s waterproofing layer. Below the membrane, a dimpled drainage mat creates a gap for any condensate or minor leakage to evaporate, avoiding moisture buildup.
Finally, for projects with extreme runoff restrictions, we offer a closed-loop recirculation upgrade. A small submersible pump recycles water from the reservoir back to the top of the planter, mimicking natural irrigation cycles. This system uses a timer-controlled valve to release water only when needed, reducing waste to nearly zero.
Our factory tests every rooftop planter against simulated heavy rainfall (up to 2 inches per hour) to verify that runoff stays within local limits.
