A 12-inch depth works for compact or dwarf varieties, but for a full-sized, vigorous tomato—think Beefsteak or Roma—18 inches is the sweet spot. This allows for a vigorous root system that supports 5-6 feet of above-ground growth and heavy fruit clusters.
Equally important is the planter’s drainage and volume. A 12-inch deep planter with a 24-inch width holds about 3 cubic feet of soil, which is adequate for one medium tomato plant. For indeterminate varieties that keep growing all season, upgrade to an 18-inch depth.
