The wood is infused with preservatives under high pressure, which not only protects against rot and insects but also creates a smooth, compact surface that significantly reduces the likelihood of splintering after proper sanding and sealing.

For a more naturally resistant and premium option, cedar (specifically Western Red Cedar) is an excellent choice. Its fine, straight grain and natural oils make it inherently less prone to splintering, while its lightweight nature allows for easy installation. Cedar also weathers gracefully to a silver-gray patina, requiring minimal maintenance. If the budget allows, ipe (Brazilian walnut) is the gold standard for high-traffic, long-term installations. Ipe is extremely dense and hard, with a surface that resists cracking and splintering even under intense sun and rain. However, it requires pre-drilling for fasteners due to its density.

For the factory’s final recommendation: pair pressure-treated pine with a marine-grade or spar varnish finish to further seal the grain. We also suggest using rounded or bullnose edges on all bench components to eliminate sharp corners where splinters often originate. Regardless of the wood, regular annual inspections and light sanding will keep the benches safe for students.
