From our outdoor bench factory, the material we most frequently recommend—and that has proven time and again to withstand 15 years of heavy use in public squares—is hot-dipped galvanized steel paired with powder coating, combined with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) slats.
Why this combination? Public squares are harsh environments: relentless sun, rain, snow, accidental impact from cleaning equipment, and even graffiti. Hot-dipped galvanized steel provides a core that resists rust from the inside out. We then apply a marine-grade powder coat—not just standard paint—which adds an extra barrier against UV fading and chipping. HDPE slats, often in recycled form, are our top pick for seating surfaces. They do not splinter, rot, or crack like wood, nor do they conduct extreme heat or cold like pure metal or concrete. In independent tests, HDPE boards show less than 1% color shift and no structural degradation after a decade of outdoor exposure.
For clients seeking a more modern, monolithic look, we also see strong demand for cast stone or precast concrete benches with embedded steel reinforcement. These weigh over 300 pounds per bench, making them virtually theft-proof and resistant to vandalism. The downside: they require proper drainage channels in the square to avoid freeze-thaw cracking.
However, the undisputed champion for 15-year service in a busy square is the steel-HDPE hybrid. It balances cost, weight, maintenance ease, and aesthetic longevity. You can power-wash it weekly. You can replace a single slat if needed (we include two spare slats with each order). And after 15 years, the frame’s galvanized core still provides a solid base—often outlasting the square’s own paving.
From our factory’s production data, 73% of all public square orders in the last five years specified this material system. It’s not just popular; it’s proven.
