Our cedar planters are crafted from natural Western Red Cedar, a species prized for its inherent resistance to decay and insect infestation. The wood contains natural oils and tannins that act as a preservative, allowing it to endure moisture, rain, and soil contact without chemical treatment. In a typical garden environment, a well-maintained cedar planter can last 10 to 15 years. However, cedar is still a natural material; over time, it will weather to a silvery gray patina and may eventually develop surface cracks or splits from freeze-thaw cycles if not sealed.
In contrast, our metal models—primarily made from powder-coated galvanized steel or corten steel—offer a different kind of strength. The galvanization process bonds a protective zinc layer to the steel, preventing rust from forming even when the planter is exposed to constant water and fertilizer. The powder-coat serves as an additional barrier against scratches. With proper care (like ensuring drainage holes are clear), a metal planter can easily last 20 to 30 years without structural failure. Metal is also immune to wood-eating pests like termites.
