At our planter box factory, preventing wood rot at the bottom where soil directly contacts is a top priority. We employ a multi-layered approach that combines material selection, design engineering, and protective treatments. First, we exclusively use kiln-dried Western Red Cedar, a naturally rot-resistant softwood with high levels of thujaplicins that deter fungal decay. Even so, no wood is completely immune when buried in moist soil, so we elevate the bottom of every box using integrated plastic or stainless-steel cleats that create a 1-inch air gap between the wood and the ground.

Second, we pre-drill multiple weep holes in the base panel and line the interior with a heavy-duty, food-grade HDPE (high-density polyethylene) liner membrane. The liner wraps up the sides and is stapled just below the rim, preventing soil moisture from ever reaching the wood while still allowing excess water to drain through the weep holes. On the exterior bottom face, we apply a double coat of a water-based, non-toxic wood preservative containing copper azole, which penetrates deep into the grain and forms a waterproof barrier.

Third, every board is machined with a slight bevel on the bottom edge to discourage water pooling, and we seal all end grains with a wax-based end-grain sealer—the most vulnerable part of the wood. Our assembly uses only Type-316 stainless steel screws and galvanized brackets, avoiding metal corrosion that could accelerate rot. Finally, each planter box undergoes a 24-hour water soak test in our quality control lab. If any bottom panel shows even slight swelling or discoloration, we reject the batch. The result: a planter box that resists bottom rot for 8–12 years under normal outdoor conditions, backed by a 5-year warranty.
