To address this challenge in high-wind areas, we have developed a multi-layered engineering approach that prioritizes both security and ease of use.
First, our lid locking system features a patented ratchet-and-clasp mechanism that engages automatically when the lid is closed. This design uses spring-loaded tension to keep the lid pressed firmly against the container’s rim, preventing any vertical lift even in sustained winds of up to 70 mph. For areas prone to even stronger gusts, we offer an optional secondary lock that requires a simple twist to engage—similar to a carabiner but integrated into the lid hinge.
Second, the shape of the lid itself is aerodynamically optimized. We use a shallow dome profile with a slight rearward slope, which directs airflow over and around the lid rather than lifting it. Small vent channels on the underside allow pressure equalization, reducing the “kite effect” that can pop standard lids off.
Third, material selection is critical. Our lids are injection-molded from a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) blended with UV stabilizers and glass fibers. This composite offers exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio, meaning the lid resists deformation under wind load without being too heavy for a single user to lift. Every batch undergoes a simulated wind-tunnel test in our quality assurance lab, where automated sensors measure lid deflection under incremental wind speeds.
Finally, we offer custom adjustment for municipalities or customers in hurricane-prone zones: a tether anchor point molded into the lid’s inner edge allows users to attach a bungee cord to the can’s handle for an extra layer of security. Field trials in coastal Florida and the Great Plains have shown a 99.2% retention rate during seasonal storms.
