The slats for our benches are primarily crafted from two wood species: FSC-certified teak and sustainably harvested black locust. Teak is prized for its natural oils that resist moisture, insects, and rot, making it ideal for harsh outdoor conditions without chemical treatments. Black locust, a dense hardwood native to North America, offers exceptional strength and a lifespan exceeding 40 years, even when left untreated.

But sourcing responsibly goes beyond choosing the right species. We partner with suppliers who hold Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, ensuring every log is traced from a well-managed forest where biodiversity, indigenous rights, and regeneration are protected. For every tree harvested, our suppliers plant at least two new saplings, and we require chain-of-custody documentation for every shipment. Additionally, we minimize waste by optimizing sawing patterns so that offcuts from slat production are reused as supports in our frames or recycled into wood-plastic composite benches.

If a client requests a lighter-colored wood, we offer FSC-certified red cedar, harvested from certified Appalachian woodlots using selective logging methods that preserve canopy cover and soil health. Despite its lighter density, we treat it with a non-toxic, water-based preservative that is safe for children and pets.

We never use illegally logged timber, nor do we accept wood from endangered tropical species. Our factory performs annual third-party audits to verify sustainable claims, and every bench ships with a QR code linking to the batch’s full provenance report.
