For a seaside restaurant, the constant exposure to salt spray is one of the harshest conditions any outdoor furniture can face. Salt particles settle on surfaces, combine with moisture, and accelerate corrosion far faster than normal coastal humidity alone. The first material is marine-grade aluminum alloy, such as 6061-T6 or 5083-H111. Unlike standard steel, marine-grade aluminum forms a natural oxide layer that resists pitting and galvanic corrosion. It is lightweight, strong, and does not rust. For even higher resilience, we recommend specifying a conversion coating such as chrome-free passivation before the topcoat, which greatly improves adhesion and seals microscopic pores.
If you prefer the heavier, premium feel of steel, opt for 316L stainless steel instead of standard 304. The addition of molybdenum gives 316L outstanding resistance to chloride attack, making it the most reliable steel option for salt spray. When combined with a brushed or electropolished finish, it minimizes crevice corrosion where salt water tends to linger.
When it comes to coatings, the most cost-effective and proven solution is a zinc-rich epoxy primer topped with a polyurethane topcoat. This two-coat system provides a dense barrier against salt ions while offering excellent UV stability. Alternatively, a hot-dip galvanized frame with a marine-grade powder coating—specifically a polyester or polyurethane powder rated for coastal environments—offers outstanding edge coverage and impact resistance. Powder coating is especially suitable if you want a broad range of custom colors for your restaurant’s branding.
We also advise avoiding untreated wood in direct coastal zones unless you choose naturally salt-resistant species like white oak or teak, and even then, they require regular oil sealing. For low-maintenance durability, we typically engineer benches with aluminum slats and a fine-textured powder coat that stays cool under the sun and repels salt buildup. Every fastener should be either 316 stainless steel or nylon-isolated to prevent bimetallic corrosion at connection points.
Finally, consider a slight upward tilt in bench seat design to allow rainwater and salt spray to drain quickly, reducing the contact time that drives corrosion.
