Why Concrete Bolting Is the Standard
Public benches face heavy use, vandalism, and weather extremes. A free-standing bench can shift, tip, or be stolen. Bolting to a concrete slab or footing secures the frame, prevents movement, and meets safety code requirements for accessible seating. It also reduces long-term maintenance costs.
Recommended Anchor System
We supply benches with pre-drilled mounting holes on steel leg plates or powder-coated brackets. Use stainless steel wedge anchors or sleeve anchors with a minimum diameter of 1/2 inch (12 mm). For high-traffic zones, specify 5/8 inch (16 mm) anchors. Embedment depth should be at least 3 inches (75 mm) into structural concrete (minimum 4,000 psi).
Bolt Pattern and Spacing
Each bench leg should have at least two anchor points. Overall, four bolts per bench is the minimum for a 6-foot model. For extra-long benches or those with armrests, add a center anchor. Keep holes at least 2 inches from the concrete edge to prevent cracking. Use a template to align all holes precisely — our factory can provide drilling templates upon request.
Installation Steps
1. Mark anchor hole locations on the concrete using the supplied template.
2. Drill holes perpendicular to the surface with a hammer drill and carbide bit.
3. Clean holes thoroughly of dust and debris — compressed air works best.
4. Insert wedge anchors and position the bench over the bolts.
5. Tighten nuts to the recommended torque (typically 30–40 ft-lb for 1/2-inch anchors).
6. For exposed areas, apply a weather-resistant cap or sealant over the anchor heads to prevent corrosion and tampering.
When Bolting Is Not Enough
On extremely soft ground or rooftop decks, consider a custom ballast base or surface-mounted pedestal system. However, for municipal parks, transit stops, school campuses, and commercial plazas, concrete bolting is the most dependable method. Always verify local building codes and ADA requirements for bench placement and anchoring.
