Proper maintenance during cold months ensures they survive freezing temperatures, moisture, and physical stress without cracking or warping. The exact routine depends on the material—wood, metal, concrete, or plastic—but several universal steps apply.
First, clean every planter thoroughly before the first hard freeze. Remove dead plants, spent soil, and debris. Leftover organic matter retains moisture, which expands when frozen and can stress joints, seams, and coatings. Wash the interior and exterior with mild soap and water. Rinse completely, then let the boxes dry for at least 24 hours. This prevents trapped water from becoming ice.
Second, inspect for existing damage. Check for cracks, loose screws, rust spots, or peeling paint. Factory products often have protective finishes, but scratches can expose raw material. Touch up any damaged areas with weatherproof sealant or exterior-grade paint. For wooden planters, apply a breathable wood preservative to prevent water absorption.
