Great question—rust is a legitimate concern, especially for outdoor trash cans exposed to rain, humidity, and temperature swings. At our factory, we treat every metal component as if it will live a hard life outside. Here’s exactly what we do to keep rust away.
First, we start with a clean surface. All steel or iron parts go through a multi-stage pretreatment bath: alkaline degreasing, water rinsing, and then a phosphate conversion coating. This phosphate layer creates a microscopic, tooth-like texture that helps the next coating bond chemically rather than just sitting on top. It also adds a first line of defense against corrosion, even if the top layer gets scratched.
Next, we apply a zinc-rich epoxy primer. This isn’t your typical spray paint. The primer is loaded with zinc dust, which acts as a sacrificial anode. If moisture reaches a scratch, the zinc corrodes first instead of the steel beneath it—this is the same principle used in marine and automotive underbody protection. The primer is applied via a robotic electrostatic spray system, ensuring even coverage on edges, corners, and hard-to-reach seams where rust often starts.
After the primer is cured in our oven, we apply the main protective coat: a high-performance polyester powder coating. Unlike liquid paint, powder coating is applied as dry particles that are electrostatically charged and then melted into a smooth, seamless film at around 200°C. The result is a tough, impact-resistant shell that is much thicker and more uniform than conventional spray paint. It resists chipping, cracking, fading, and most importantly, it seals out moisture completely. We offer this in a variety of colors and textures, and every batch is tested for thickness, adhesion, and salt-spray resistance.
For extra protection in high-corrosion environments—coastal areas, industrial zones, or places with heavy road salt—we can add a clear topcoat sealer. This optional layer provides a slick, easy-to-clean surface that also blocks UV rays, preventing the color from fading and the coating from becoming brittle over time.
Finally, all bolts, hinges, and wheel brackets receive a separate treatment: they are made from either stainless steel or coated with a food-grade zinc-nickel plating. We then apply a penetrative wax seal to threaded areas and pivot points, which gives an added layer of moisture repellency during shipping and initial use.
Of course, no coating is completely indestructible. But our three-stage defense—phosphate base, zinc-rich primer, and powder topcoat—far exceeds standard industry requirements. In independent salt-spray tests (ASTM B117), our finished parts withstand over 500 hours of exposure without red rust. For context, many cheap trash cans begin showing corrosion after just 50 hours.
