If you live in a region where winter temperatures plunge well below freezing, you’ve probably asked yourself: “Will my planter boxes crack?” As someone who runs a planter box factory, I can give you a straightforward answer: it depends on the material, the manufacturing process, and how you use them. But here’s the good news—when engineered correctly, many of our planters handle freezing temperatures beautifully and won’t crack.

The number one culprit behind planter cracks in winter is water absorption. When a planter is porous—like cheap terracotta or low-grade concrete—it soaks up moisture. When that water freezes, it expands by about 9%. That internal pressure pushes against the walls of the planter, and eventually, the surface fractures. This is why you see so many “frost-damaged” pots after a cold snap.

At our factory, we specifically design for cold climates. We use high-density materials with low water absorption, such as fiberglass-reinforced concrete, polypropylene with UV stabilizers, and specially cured lightweight stone blends. That said, there are two things you must do to guarantee longevity. First, make sure your planter has proper drainage holes. Standing water inside the soil—not inside the walls—can still create expanding ice that pushes outward and can damage the structure. Second, try to leave a little space between the soil and the rim of the planter, and avoid filling it completely full of wet soil before a deep freeze. For extra protection, you can raise the planter on feet or wooden blocks so the base doesn’t sit in a frozen puddle.

Another key factor is the shape of the planter. Sharp corners and narrow necks create stress concentration points. That’s why our designs use gentle curves and thicker bases. These features distribute the stress of expansion evenly, reducing the chance of any single spot giving way.
