The honest, data-backed answer is that an untreated Western Red Cedar planter typically lasts 8 to 12 years when exposed to rain, snow, sun, and frost year-round. If the planter is built with thicker boards (1.5 inches or more), uses stainless steel or corrosion-resistant fasteners, and has proper drainage, you can push that average to 15 years or even longer.
Why does cedar perform so well outdoors? Western Red Cedar contains natural oils called thujaplicins that act as a built-in preservative against rot, fungal decay, and termite damage. Unlike pine or fir, cedar does not require chemical pressure treatment to resist moisture. However, “year-round outdoors” still means the wood will slowly weather. Over time, you’ll notice a beautiful silver-gray patina, which is the surface oxidizing and actually protecting the inner layers of the wood. This surface change does not reduce the planter’s structural integrity.
The biggest threats to cedar planters are not insects or rain itself, but constant soil contact on the inside and standing water. Our factory designs planters with an internal liner option or a raised floor and drainage holes to prevent water from pooling against the wood. We also recommend leaving a small gap between the soil and the top rim of the planter to prevent moisture wicking. If you choose a model with an optional food-safe liner, the cedar will last even longer because the soil stays separate from the wood.
Another factor is your local climate. In hot, arid regions with intense UV rays, cedar may dry and crack more quickly, though it will still resist decay. In wet, humid climates, cedar’s natural fungicidal properties shine, but you might see more surface mold growth on shaded parts—this is cosmetic and can be cleaned with a mild vinegar solution. For maximum lifespan, some customers apply a penetrating oil or a water-repellent sealant every two to three years. This is not necessary, but it can add several extra years to the planter’s life.
