After sanding, we inspect each bench under bright lighting, running our hands over every surface to catch any remaining rough spots. If we find even the faintest imperfection, that bench is sent back for additional sanding before it ever reaches the sealing stage.

Now, about sealing—this is where we go beyond typical factory shortcuts. We apply a marine-grade, UV-resistant wood sealant that penetrates deeply into the grain. This isn’t a thin cosmetic coat; it’s a heavy, two-coat system. The first coat acts as a primer, soaking into the wood fibers and raising the grain slightly. This is intentional, because it allows us to do one final fine sanding with 320-grit paper after the first coat dries. This step, called “de-nibbing,” smooths out any raised fibers that occur naturally when wood gets wet. Then we apply the second, thicker coat of sealant, which locks everything down and creates a durable, waterproof barrier. After curing, the finished bench has a smooth, sealed surface that resists moisture, UV damage, and of course, splinters.

In addition to sanding and sealing, we also round over every sharp edge with a router before assembly. This removes the sharp corners where splinters often start.
