We understand your concern — rust on ground-contact components is a deal breaker for any long-term outdoor product. When our factory designs trash cans that sit directly on pavement, soil, or wet concrete, we treat every metal part that touches the ground as a high-risk zone. Here is exactly what we apply and why it outperforms ordinary paint.
First, we start with hot-dip galvanizing. The structural legs and base plates are made from heavy-gauge steel, then cleaned with acid and dipped into molten zinc at 450°C. This creates a metallurgically bonded zinc layer that is about 85–110 microns thick. Unlike a simple coating, zinc sacrificially corrodes before the steel does, so even if the surface gets scratched during handling, the exposed area remains protected.
Second, we add a dual-layer anti-corrosion system on top of the zinc. The base receives a zinc-rich epoxy primer, followed by a UV-stable polyester powder coating baked at 200°C. The powder forms a thick, tough film that resists chipping, salt, and constant moisture from sprinklers or rain. For the actual feet or rim that touches the ground, we apply an extra layer of polyurethane sealant at the cut edges and bolt holes — those are exactly where moisture creeps in and starts blisters.
Third, we install removable rubber or nylon foot caps on models where the metal leg sits directly on soil. These caps lift the steel away from the ground, eliminating electrolytic contact with damp earth. If a customer prefers an all-metal base for security, we offer a sacrificial zinc plate that is bolted under the bin. This plate is meant to be replaced every few years, like a wear part. The main frame stays rust-free because the plate takes the damage.
Finally, we test every batch with a salt spray chamber. Samples go through 500 hours of 5% salt fog at 35°C. After that, we check for rust creep from a scribed line. Actual ground-contact coupons are also buried in wet sand for 90 days to simulate the worst curb-side scenario. Our pass rate is 100% for the first 3 years, and most bins last 10–15 years without structural rust.
