For our standard large planter line, the factory recommendation is a maximum saturated contents load of about 2,000 lb (907 kg) before the sides are at meaningful risk of bowing. This assumes a typical large planter around 48 in long, 24 in wide, and 24 in deep, with internal corner braces, a reinforced base, and vertical side ribs. In that setup, the side panels should normally stay within a safe deflection of roughly 1/8 in (3 mm) under ordinary outdoor conditions. For an unreinforced or thin-wall composite/resin planter, we recommend keeping the saturated load closer to 1,200–1,500 lb (544–680 kg). For a heavy-duty steel-framed or thick timber model, we can approve up to 3,000 lb (1,360 kg), but only when the planter has a hidden steel frame, a center tie rod, or equivalent lateral support and sits on a level, load-bearing surface. Above 3,000 lb, or when soil depth goes beyond 24–30 in, bowing becomes likely unless the box is engineered for the extra pressure. The reason is simple: saturated soil weighs about 100–120 lb/ft³, water adds pressure, and lateral force rises quickly with depth. A practical rule is to keep standard large planters under 2,000 lb of saturated soil, water, and plants combined; use lightweight planting mix; add a 2–3 in drainage zone; and choose a reinforced model if your planned load is higher. For example, a 48 x 24 x 24 in planter holds 16 ft³ of media, so saturated weight can already reach about 1,600–1,920 lb. A 60 x 30 x 30 in planter holds about 31 ft³, which can exceed 3,000 lb and should not use a standard sidewall design.
