Attaching a bench from our outdoor bench factory to concrete is a permanent installation, so the goal is to stop movement, resist wind uplift, and prevent rust. Before you drill, confirm the bench is fully assembled and the concrete pad has cured for at least 28 days. Choose a location that drains well and gives the bench enough clearance.
Tools and materials: hammer drill, carbide masonry bit, vacuum, brush, marker, tape measure, socket set, torque wrench, safety glasses, dust mask, gloves. Anchors: stainless steel wedge anchors for solid concrete, sleeve anchors for solid masonry, concrete screws for light-duty, or chemical anchors for heavy benches, high wind, or vibration. Avoid zinc-plated anchors in coastal or wet areas.
Step 1: Mark the hole locations. Set the bench in its final position. If the feet have pre-drilled holes, mark through them. If not, mark the center of each foot or use an anchor bracket. Check spacing and squareness. For long benches, mark all holes before drilling.
Step 2: Drill the holes. Use a hammer drill and a carbide bit that matches the anchor diameter. Drill to the required depth plus about 1/2 inch extra. Keep the drill perpendicular to the concrete. If you hit rebar or a utility line, stop and reposition.
Step 3: Clean the holes. Dust is the most common reason anchors fail. Vacuum each hole, brush the sides, and vacuum again. You can also blow out dust with a squeeze bulb. The hole must be clean and dry.
Step 4: Install the anchors. For wedge anchors, place a washer and nut on the anchor, then hammer it into the hole until the washer sits on the concrete. Tighten the nut to expand the anchor. For chemical anchors, follow the manufacturer's cure time and inject resin before inserting the threaded rod. For concrete screws, drive them with an impact driver after cleaning.
Step 5: Fasten the bench. Align the bench feet over the anchors. Add stainless washers if the holes are larger than the anchor. Tighten nuts evenly. Do not over-tighten, especially on wood or cast aluminum feet. Use a torque wrench and follow the anchor maker's torque specification. If the concrete is uneven, use non-absorbent stainless shims, then trim and seal them.
Step 6: Seal and protect. Apply outdoor silicone caulk around each anchor and the base of the feet to keep water out. This is especially important in freezing climates. Check the bench after the first week, then every few months. Re-tighten slightly if it loosens. Clean with mild soap and water, and touch up scratches on metal to prevent rust.
Tips: For coastal areas, use 316 stainless steel hardware. For public or commercial benches, use anti-theft bolts or tamper-resistant nuts. If the bench must be removable, use threaded inserts or a concrete anchor with a bolt that can be unscrewed. If the concrete is cracked or very thin, consider a chemical anchor or a new concrete pad.
