At our trash can factory, we do not use one single steel grade for every public trash can. The right choice depends on the installation environment, climate, cleaning method, expected lifespan, design style, and budget. For municipal streets, parks, campuses, airports, commercial districts, and residential communities, we mainly select steel based on corrosion resistance, impact strength, coating performance, and maintenance needs.
For standard outdoor public trash cans, we often use cold-rolled carbon steel such as SPCC, DC01, or Q235. Typical thickness ranges from 0.8 mm to 1.5 mm for the bin body and 1.5 mm to 3.0 mm for frames, bases, and load-bearing parts. After laser cutting, bending, welding, and polishing, the steel goes through degreasing, rust removal, phosphating, and drying. Then we apply an epoxy anti-rust primer and a polyester powder coating. This creates a durable, colorful, and cost-effective trash can for sidewalks, schools, office parks, and residential areas. However, for very humid or coastal locations, we recommend a stronger anti-corrosion system.
For humid, rainy, or moderately corrosive environments, we use hot-dip galvanized steel. The zinc coating protects the steel by acting as a sacrificial layer, which helps guard cut edges and scratches. We can leave it in a natural silver finish or powder coat it after proper pretreatment. Common thicknesses are 1.0 mm to 2.0 mm. These bins are widely used in parks, bus stations, industrial zones, and coastal towns because they offer a good balance of strength, weather resistance, and cost.
For high-end public spaces, airports, hospitals, shopping malls, and modern city centers, we use 304 stainless steel. It provides excellent rust resistance, easy cleaning, and a premium appearance. We usually use 0.8 mm to 1.5 mm for the body and 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm for structural parts. Available finishes include brushed, satin, mirror, and powder-coated stainless steel. Grade 304 works well in most urban outdoor conditions, but it still needs regular cleaning in salty or heavily polluted air.
For marine waterfronts, chemical plants, tunnels, and highly corrosive areas, we recommend 316 or 316L stainless steel. The added molybdenum improves chloride resistance, so these grades resist pitting and rust better than 304. They cost more, but they can deliver a longer service life and lower replacement costs in severe environments.
For parks, plazas, and landscape projects, we sometimes use weathering steel such as Corten A or Corten B. It develops a stable rust-like patina that protects the inner steel and gives a natural architectural look. It is not ideal for wet, salty, or acidic conditions, and it may stain nearby surfaces, so we design proper drainage and protective liners when needed.
We also pay attention to internal components. Liners may be galvanized steel or stainless steel. Hinges, locks, and fasteners can be stainless steel for extra durability. We add nylon or rubber bumpers to reduce noise and drainage holes to prevent water buildup.
