What’s the smallest planter our planter box factory can make? The short answer is that our standard smallest planter box is a 3-inch cube, about 76 mm x 76 mm x 76 mm on the outside. For wood and composite planter boxes, this is the smallest size we recommend for clean joinery, a stable base, and enough soil for a small succulent, herb seedling, or decorative plant.

If you need something smaller for gifts, wedding favors, or retail displays, we can produce custom mini planters down to 2 inches x 2 inches x 2 inches (50 mm x 50 mm x 50 mm) externally. With 1/4-inch (6 mm) walls, the inside planting area is roughly 1.5 inches square (38 mm). That is tiny, so it works best for very small succulents, moss, air plants, or short-term seedlings. For long-term plant health, we usually recommend at least a 3-inch planter.

Can we go smaller? Yes, in certain materials. Injection-molded plastic, stamped metal, and 3D-printed resin can reach 1 inch x 1 inch x 1 inch (25 mm cube) or even smaller. However, these micro planters are more decorative than horticultural. They dry out quickly, restrict root growth, and may need frequent watering. If the planter must support a living plant for months, 2 inches is the practical minimum and 3 inches is safer.

The smallest planter we can make also depends on details: drainage holes, a saucer, liner, lid, laser engraving, custom color, and packaging. A drainage hole can be added to a 2-inch planter, but it leaves less bottom strength. A saucer may increase the footprint. Custom logos are easier on 3-inch and larger planters because there is more surface area.

For most customers, the best choice is a 3-inch mini planter box. It is small enough for favors and shelf displays, yet large enough for a real plant.
