At our planter box factory, pet safety is not an afterthought. We do not use CCA, creosote, or pentachlorophenol in any product intended for homes with animals or edible gardens. Those older treatments can contain arsenic or other compounds that are risky if a dog or cat chews the wood or licks treated surfaces. Instead, we separate our wood into three clear categories: untreated, heat-treated, and responsibly treated.
For the safest choice, we recommend untreated cedar, cypress, or thermally modified wood. These resist rot naturally without chemical preservatives. If a customer wants extra durability, we offer water-based, low-VOC finishes and plant-safe sealers such as linseed oil, beeswax, or cured acrylic. We avoid solvent-heavy stains, formaldehyde-based binders, and heavy-metal preservatives.
When a project requires pressure-treated lumber, we use modern copper-based systems like ACQ or copper azole only when requested. These are far less toxic than old arsenic treatments, but they are not chew toys. We tell pet owners to line the inside with food-grade plastic or geotextile, keep soil separated from treated boards, and stop pets from gnawing the frame. If your pet is a determined chewer, choose our untreated line or add a metal or cedar barrier.
Every batch is documented. We can provide safety data sheets, treatment details, and finish information so you can check with your veterinarian. The short answer: yes, we use chemicals—but not the harmful ones you may be worried about. We give you pet-safe options, full transparency, and practical guidance for a beautiful, secure planter box.
