At our outdoor bench factory, “depth” can mean two different measurements. Seat depth is the distance from the front edge of the seat to the point where the backrest begins. Overall depth is the full front-to-back measurement, including the backrest and any frame overhang. For standard outdoor benches, seat depth usually runs from 16 to 20 inches (41 to 51 cm). Our most common factory standard is 18 inches (46 cm). Overall depth with a backrest is typically 22 to 28 inches (56 to 71 cm), with 24 to 26 inches (61 to 66 cm) being the sweet spot for patio, garden, and park benches.

Does that depth make a bench comfortable for two adults? Seat depth supports one person from front to back; it does not create space for two adults side by side. Two-adult comfort depends mainly on bench width, also called length. For two average adults to sit comfortably, each person needs about 22 to 24 inches (56 to 61 cm) of seat width. That means a two-seater bench should be at least 48 inches (122 cm) wide, and 54 to 60 inches (137 to 152 cm) is more comfortable, especially if people wear coats or want elbow room.

Our standard outdoor benches are made with this balance in mind. A typical two-adult model has an 18-inch (46 cm) seat depth, a 24-inch (61 cm) overall depth, and a 48- to 60-inch (122 to 152 cm) width. With a slight backrest angle and a seat height of 17 to 18 inches (43 to 46 cm), this setup lets two adults sit side by side with thigh support and room to shift. If the bench is deeper than 20 inches, shorter users may feel pressure behind the knees or need a lumbar cushion. If it is shallower than 16 inches, it can feel perched rather than relaxed.

So, the direct answer is yes: standard benches from our outdoor bench factory can be deep enough and wide enough for two adults to sit comfortably, provided the bench is a true two-seater with a 48-inch minimum width and a 17- to 20-inch seat depth. For larger adults, choose a 20-inch seat depth and a 60-inch width. For smaller adults, a 17-inch depth and 48-inch width may be ideal.
