I'm worried about rust—does your outdoor bench factory use stainless steel or just powder-coated hardware?

If you are worried about rust, you are asking the right question before placing an outdoor bench order. At our outdoor bench factory, we do not treat powder-coated hardware as a complete rust solution for outdoor furniture. Instead, we use stainless steel hardware on outdoor bench models where long-term corrosion resistance matters, and we can supply 304 or 316 marine-grade stainless steel depending on the climate and budget.

The honest answer is that our factory can use both stainless steel and powder-coated components, but they serve different purposes. Powder coating is mainly a finish for steel frames, armrests, legs, and other large visible parts. It gives color, texture, and a protective barrier. However, powder coating is a surface coating. If it is scratched, chipped, or breached by a drill hole or thread, moisture can reach the underlying steel and rust can begin. That is why we do not rely on powder-coated hardware alone for outdoor benches.

For fasteners and connecting parts, such as bolts, screws, washers, nuts, brackets, pivot pins, and anchors, we recommend stainless steel. Grade 304 stainless steel handles most outdoor environments well, including rain, humidity, and temperature changes. For coastal areas, salt spray, or high-humidity regions, we recommend grade 316 stainless steel. It contains molybdenum, which improves resistance to chloride and salt. If a project is near the ocean, a 304 fastener may eventually show tea staining or pitting, while 316 is much more reliable.

Some outdoor benches use powder-coated steel hardware, zinc-plated hardware, or hot-dip galvanized hardware. These can work in dry climates or budget-focused indoor-outdoor uses, but they are not equal to stainless steel for long-term outdoor exposure. Powder-coated fasteners can also be problematic because the coating may crack when tightened, and it can interfere with thread fit. Zinc plating offers sacrificial protection, but it wears away over time. Hot-dip galvanizing is thicker and more durable, but it is not as clean-looking as stainless steel and can still corrode in aggressive salt environments.

At our outdoor bench factory, the standard approach for serious outdoor benches is:

- Stainless steel fasteners, usually 304, with 316 available for coastal projects.

- Powder-coated steel frames after proper pretreatment: degreasing, rinsing, phosphating or chromate conversion, drying, and electrostatic powder spraying.

- Protective caps, nylon washers, or isolation pads where dissimilar metals meet, to reduce galvanic corrosion.

- Drainage-friendly designs that prevent water from pooling around joints and hardware.

- Optional aluminum or galvanized steel substructures for extreme environments.

If you want a rust-resistant outdoor bench, the hardware specification matters as much as the frame finish. If you are comparing suppliers, ask specific questions: What grade of stainless steel is used for bolts and screws? Is it 201, 304, or 316? Are the fasteners actually stainless, or only the visible caps? Is the frame powder-coated steel, aluminum, or galvanized steel? What salt-spray test standard and hours can you provide? Can you supply material certificates? A factory that answers these clearly is more likely to deliver benches that last.

So, does our outdoor bench factory use stainless steel or just powder-coated hardware? For outdoor benches, we use stainless steel hardware as the corrosion-resistant choice, and powder coating as a durable finish for frames and selected components. We can customize the mix based on your climate, budget, and expected service life. If rust is your main concern, choose stainless steel hardware, preferably 304 or 316, and treat powder coating as protection for the frame, not as a replacement for corrosion-resistant fasteners.
