Thank you for asking. At our trash can factory, steel cans are not built with one universal thickness. We select the steel gauge based on the bin’s size, capacity, indoor or outdoor placement, expected waste volume, and risk of rough handling. Standard steel trash cans normally use 0.6 mm to 1.5 mm thick metal, while heavy-duty public models commonly use 1.2 mm to 1.5 mm. For extremely demanding locations, we can produce 2.0 mm steel bodies.
A practical thickness guide:
- 0.6–0.8 mm, about 24–22 gauge: light-duty indoor office or paper bins.
- 0.8–1.0 mm, about 22–20 gauge: standard commercial and hotel bins.
- 1.0–1.2 mm, about 20–18 gauge: medium-duty public areas with moderate traffic.
- 1.2–1.5 mm, about 18–16 gauge: heavy-duty outdoor, park, street, school, airport, and transit bins.
- 1.5–2.0 mm, about 16–14 gauge: extreme-duty, high-traffic, anti-vandal, or industrial use.
So, is it heavy-duty enough for public use? Yes, when the correct model is specified. For most public-use projects, we recommend at least 1.2 mm, or 18 gauge, steel. For busy streets, stations, parks, campuses, and coastal or humid locations, 1.5 mm, or 16 gauge, is a stronger choice. A 1.2–1.5 mm steel body offers good resistance to dents, bending, and daily abuse while remaining practical to move and empty.
Thickness is important, but it is not the only factor. Durability also depends on steel grade, coating, welding quality, bottom reinforcement, ribs, rolled edges, hinges, lid design, and installation. Our heavy-duty public bins can use galvanized steel with powder coating for rust resistance, or 304/316 stainless steel for wet, salty, or high-humidity environments. Reinforced bases, lockable lids, and anchor points further improve performance in public spaces.
We can customize the metal thickness, dimensions, coating color, logo, lid type, and liner system. If you tell us the location, waste type, capacity, and traffic level, we can recommend the right thickness. For public use, choose a heavy-duty model with at least 1.2 mm steel; for maximum durability, choose 1.5 mm or thicker. Our heavy-duty steel trash cans are designed to meet those public-use demands.
