Short answer: sometimes, but usually not in the way a small restaurant owner hopes. A trash can factory may have a minimum order quantity (MOQ), and for a direct factory order, five bins is often below that minimum. Some factories sell standard, in-stock bins in small batches, while others require 50, 100, 500, or more units per order. If you need custom colors, logos, sizes, or branded lids, the MOQ can be much higher.
Factories set MOQs because producing and shipping small orders costs almost as much as larger ones. They must buy raw materials, set up machines, print packaging, arrange freight, and manage paperwork. For only five bins, the unit price may rise sharply, or the factory may decline the order entirely.
That does not mean you cannot get five bins. It means you should choose a different supply route. Restaurant equipment dealers, janitorial suppliers, local distributors, and online commercial retailers often sell trash cans individually or in small packs. They buy from factories in bulk and resell smaller quantities to businesses like yours. This is usually the fastest and most affordable option for a small restaurant.
If you still want to approach a factory directly, ask clear questions. Inquire whether they accept sample orders, trial orders, or mixed-model orders. Ask if the bins are in stock and ready to ship. Confirm the MOQ, unit price, shipping cost, lead time, payment terms, and return policy. You may find a factory willing to sell five units as a sample, but expect to pay a higher price per bin and possibly expensive freight.
You can also reduce the need for factory customization. Buy standard commercial trash cans from a distributor and add labels or decals locally. Or ask a local sheet metal or fabrication shop for small-batch help if your needs are unusual. For most small restaurants, the practical answer is this: a factory may have an MOQ, but you can still buy five bins through a wholesaler, distributor, or retailer. Factory-direct buying makes sense when you need bulk quantities, not five units.
