Our outdoor bench factory benches made from HDPE lumber are engineered for exceptionally low maintenance. HDPE, or high-density polyethylene, is a solid, non-porous polymer that does not rot, splinter, crack, or absorb moisture like wood. Because the color is molded throughout the material and UV stabilizers are added, our benches do not need painting, staining, sealing, or waterproofing. That said, a few simple care steps will keep them looking clean, safe, and attractive for decades.
Routine cleaning is the main maintenance requirement. For most outdoor settings, wash each bench every three to six months with a solution of mild dish soap and warm water. Use a soft cloth, sponge, or soft-bristle brush to remove dust, pollen, bird droppings, food residue, and environmental grime. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow the bench to air dry. In coastal areas, near swimming pools, or in high-traffic commercial spaces, clean more often—monthly or quarterly—to prevent salt, chlorine, and dirt buildup.
For stubborn stains, use a non-abrasive cleaner approved for plastics. A diluted household bleach solution (typically one part bleach to nine parts water) can be used for mold, mildew, or tough organic stains. Apply it to the affected area, let it sit for a few minutes, scrub gently with a soft brush, and rinse well. For grease or oil, use a mild degreaser or a solution of warm water and dish detergent. Always test any new cleaning product on a hidden area first. Never mix bleach with other cleaners, especially ammonia.
Avoid abrasive pads, steel wool, scouring powders, and aggressive brushes, as they can dull or scratch the surface. Also avoid strong solvents such as acetone, paint thinner, MEK, and harsh acid cleaners. A pressure washer may be used on a low-pressure setting, but keep the nozzle at a safe distance and avoid directing a concentrated stream at seams, hardware, or edges. High pressure can force water into joints or damage the surface texture.
Hardware maintenance is also important. Our benches typically use stainless steel or coated fasteners. Check bolts, screws, and brackets once or twice a year. Tighten any loose hardware with the appropriate tool. In areas with extreme temperature changes, HDPE lumber expands and contracts slightly, so seasonal tightening may be needed. If hardware shows rust or damage, replace it with matching factory-approved parts. Clean hardware with a damp cloth and mild soap; do not use abrasive cleaners on coated metal.
Seasonal care is minimal. HDPE benches can remain outdoors year-round. In winter, use a plastic shovel or broom to remove snow and ice. Avoid metal shovels, chisels, or force that could scratch or chip the surface. In hot, sunny climates, the UV-stabilized color resists fading, but occasional cleaning will remove dust that can make the finish look dull. In coastal environments, rinse benches with fresh water periodically to reduce salt deposits.
What about scratches? Because HDPE lumber is solid color throughout, minor scratches are usually less noticeable than on painted or stained wood. For light scuffs, clean the area and leave it; most marks fade with weathering. For deeper scratches, contact our factory for guidance before sanding. Aggressive sanding can alter the surface texture and may affect the warranty. Do not paint or seal scratched areas—touch-up paint is not required and may not adhere properly.
Overall, HDPE lumber outdoor bench factory benches require only mild soap, water, occasional stain treatment, and basic hardware checks. They never need annual painting, staining, sealing, or rot repair. This low-maintenance routine saves time and money while keeping benches ready for parks, schools, restaurants, resorts, and public spaces. By following these simple steps, you can enjoy long-lasting, attractive outdoor seating with very little effort.
