For most wooden outdoor benches made in our factory, apply sealant every 6 to 12 months to keep the wood looking fresh and protected. In mild, sheltered conditions, one thorough application per year is often enough. In strong sun, heavy rain, coastal salt air, or humid climates, plan on resealing closer to every 6 months.
If your bench arrives new and unfinished, let it weather for about 4 to 6 weeks before the first sealant application. This helps the wood absorb the finish more evenly. If your bench is factory pre-sealed, follow the cure and care instructions that come with it, then plan the first refresh coat within about 12 months or sooner if water no longer beads on the surface.
A simple water test is the best ongoing guide. Sprinkle a little water on the seat and arms. If it beads up, the sealant is still working. If the water soaks in quickly or the wood starts to look dry, rough, or grey, it is time to clean and reseal. Clean with mild soap and water, rinse well, and let the bench dry completely for at least 48 hours before applying sealant.
Apply a thin, even coat rather than a heavy layer, and avoid sealing damp wood or trapping moisture. Use a breathable oil-based sealant or the finish recommended by the manufacturer. Pay extra attention to end grain, joints, and areas exposed to direct sun. With regular inspection and timely resealing, your outdoor bench will stay comfortable, protected, and looking new for years.
