Typically, our outdoor bench factory uses several carefully selected woods for coastal climates with salt air, because no single species fits every budget, design and maintenance plan. For premium projects, we most often recommend Grade-A teak. Its natural oils and tight grain help it resist moisture, salt spray and seasonal humidity, and it ages to a soft silver-gray if left unfinished. Teak also machines cleanly for slatted seats, curved arms and precise joinery, making it a reliable choice for seaside patios, resorts and public promenades.
For clients who want teak-level performance at a more accessible price, we frequently use iroko. Iroko is dense, dimensionally stable and naturally durable, and it performs well in salty, humid air when properly finished. We also produce many coastal benches in acacia, especially for value-focused collections. Acacia can be an excellent outdoor material when it is FSC-certified, kiln-dried to the correct moisture content and paired with a robust protective finish. For heavy-duty contract furniture, robinia—also known as black locust—is another strong option because of its hardness and natural rot resistance. Western red cedar may be used for lighter, more traditional bench designs, although it is softer and usually needs more frequent refinishing in salt-air environments.
The wood species is only part of the answer. Our coastal benches are built with marine-aware details: 316 stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized hardware, sealed end grain, raised feet, drainage-friendly slats and corrosion-resistant connectors. We specify kiln-dried timber, controlled grain orientation and tight joinery to reduce movement. We also recommend a penetrating oil or breathable wood finish and a simple routine of washing away salt residue and reapplying finish as needed. For salt-air coastal climates, we generally avoid untreated pine, spruce, beech or birch in exposed outdoor benches. The result is a bench that combines the right wood with the right construction—so it looks good, lasts longer and handles coastal weather with confidence.
