Yes. Our planter box factory can make a planter long enough to surround a tree trunk, but the best solution is usually not one rigid box bent into a circle. It is a custom modular wrap-around tree planter: two, four, or more curved or straight sections that connect around the trunk.
The key measurement is not the trunk’s width alone; it is the circumference plus clearance. Trees need room to grow, and soil should never be packed against the bark. As a rule, leave 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) of air space between the trunk and the inner planter wall, depending on tree species and trunk size. Then calculate the inner circumference: inner circumference = π × (trunk diameter + 2 × clearance).
For example, a 24-inch trunk with 6 inches of clearance on each side gives a 36-inch inner diameter and about 113 inches of inner circumference. Add a few inches for expansion gaps and connectors, and the planter panel length may be around 117–121 inches. A 48-inch trunk can require 16 feet or more of total panel length. So yes, long boxes are possible—but modular sections are easier to ship, carry, install, and adjust.
We can manufacture several wrap-around styles:
- Two half-circle sections for smaller trees.
- Four quarter-circle sections for a clean circular look.
- Hexagonal or octagonal panels for modern landscapes.
- Long straight panels joined into a square or rectangular tree surround.
- Curved FRP, powder-coated steel, aluminum, HDPE, PVC, or wood-composite panels.
For tree health, the planter should have an open bottom or a root-safe base, drainage holes, and a breathable liner if needed. Keep the soil level below the root flare. Do not bury the trunk flare or create a “soil volcano.” Use adjustable connectors so the planter can accommodate future trunk growth. Avoid nailing, screwing, or strapping anything directly into the tree. For mature or valuable trees, consult an arborist before installation.
To quote your custom wrap-around planter, send us the trunk circumference or diameter, desired clearance, planter height, planter depth, material, finish, drainage needs, and whether you want irrigation access. Our factory can pre-drill panels, label assembly order, and supply hardware. In short: yes, we can make a box long enough to wrap around a tree trunk, and we can engineer it as a modular, root-friendly tree planter rather than a risky one-piece collar.
