What’s the expected lifespan of a cedar bench from your outdoor bench factory if left uncovered outside?

2026-09-26 Visits: Abstract: How long does a cedar bench from an outdoor bench factory last if left uncovered? Expect 8–12 years on average, 5–8 in harsh weather, 10–15 in dry climates with good drainage.

At our outdoor bench factory, we give a realistic range rather than one guaranteed number. If a cedar bench is left completely uncovered outside and receives no regular oiling or sealing, the expected lifespan is usually 8 to 12 years. In mild, dry climates with good airflow and a raised base, a well-built western red cedar or eastern white cedar bench can remain structurally sound for 10 to 15 years. In hot, humid, rainy, or freeze-thaw climates, or if the legs sit directly on soil, 5 to 8 years is more realistic before rot, splitting, or joint failure becomes serious. Uncovered exposure means UV graying, repeated wet-dry cycles, and moisture trapped in end grain, joints, and feet. The bench will not fail all at once; it will gray, check, loosen, and soften at contact points first. To maximize lifespan without a cover, set it on concrete or pavers, keep feet off soil, ensure drainage, and oil it annually. If you leave it fully exposed and do nothing, expect roughly a decade of useful service from a well-made cedar bench, with the first 5 to 8 years looking good and the later years requiring inspection. Normal weathering and rot from uncovered outdoor use are not manufacturing defects.
