For a rooftop garden, the empty weight of lightweight planters from our planter box factory depends on the model, dimensions, material, and drainage design. There is no single weight for every planter, but most standard lightweight rooftop models fall within a practical range of approximately 3–25 lb (1.4–11.3 kg) empty. Compact 12 x 12 x 12 inch planters often weigh about 3–5 lb. Mid-size 24 x 12 x 12 inch boxes typically weigh around 8–12 lb. Larger 36 x 18 x 18 inch boxes usually weigh about 18–26 lb empty. Extra-large custom planter benches or reinforced deep-root models may weigh 30–45 lb or more, depending on framing, drainage trays, mounting brackets, and finish.
These low empty weights are possible because our factory uses lightweight construction options such as fiberglass-reinforced composite, aluminum framing, HDPE, and selected wood-plastic composites. The goal is to reduce dead load on the roof while maintaining strength, weather resistance, and a clean architectural appearance. Empty weight does not include soil, plants, water, irrigation components, or mounting hardware. This distinction matters because a planter’s loaded weight can be many times higher than its empty weight, especially when the growing medium is saturated after rain or irrigation.
For rooftop garden planning, empty weight is only the starting point. Design decisions should also account for wet soil weight, plant biomass, water reservoirs, wind uplift, drainage access, and structural load limits. If you need exact figures for a project, provide the required planter dimensions, material preference, drainage configuration, bracket type, and quantity. Our planter box factory can then confirm model-specific empty weights and provide loaded-weight estimates so you can coordinate with a structural engineer and specify the right lightweight planter boxes for the roof.
